- A goal/process for including people with disabilities into the society – not excluding them.

- Creating opportunities for individuals to become an active part of the community.
A chance for individuals to participate in recreation and leisure activities.
- Opportunities to increase skills and confidence.
- Recreation opportunities for individuals with special needs in an environment which is natural, positive and supportive.
- Support from peers, staff and the community.
Inclusion Policy
SWSRA and our member agencies believe that all individuals should be provided with leisure opportunities that allow for performance at their highest level of ability. Although many people achieve this through participation in a SWSRA program, others may have greater success and the member agencies adhere to the following basic principles when providing accommodations to allow for successful inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the activities of member recreation agencies.
Principles of Inclusion:
- The interests and needs of an individual participant will be addressed.
- The concerns of the family will be taken into account.
- The member agency staff will be given support by SWSRA.
- Options and choices will be made available to individuals with disabilities.
Please contact SWSRA at 708-389-9423 to discuss an individual’s options and participation in the program of choice.
How to be Included
When signing up for a Park District Program, just inform the Staff of that Park District that you will be requesting additional services. It’s as easy as that! The Park District will contact us and our Inclusion Staff will not only find the appropriate assistance but will also continue to monitor progress throughout the program. This is done through continuing communication with the Park District staff and the individual’s family members if necessary. SWSRA provides inclusion services to our Member Park Districts only and does not include our Co-op agreement with SSSRA.
Want to help with the Inclusion Process?
If you are interested in assisting with recreation activities through any of the SWSRA Member Park Districts, we can always use a helping hand! Our “Inclusion Companions” must be caring, with an open mind and heart! Interpreter skills or previous experience with behavioral disorders is a plus, but not necessary. Don’t hesitate… someone needs your assistance today! If you would like more information about Inclusion, how to become an Inclusion Companion, or have any other questions please contact Erin Lynch (708) 389-9423.
